MOVE — Number line and carrom-coin movements
Think first. Use AI purposefully. Verify always.
DISCOVER
Begin with your own idea.
Start at zero. Move 5 units right and then 7 left. Where do you finish?
Write or sketch a prediction before you read on. Use the model below to test it.
Understand
A signed movement records magnitude and direction: positive is right, negative is left. Final position is the sum of the movements.
Key Ideas
A negative position is not a negative distance. The distance from zero is its magnitude.
Visualise
Carrom number line
Begin at zero. The second movement starts where the first ends. The first arrow is solid; the second is dashed.
Endpoint: -2. Distance from zero: 2 units. A zero movement has no arrow.
Method
Start from zero, mark the first endpoint, then start the second arrow there. Read the final signed position.
Worked Example
Given
First movement −4; final position 5.
To Find
The signed second movement from −4 to the final position 5.
Reasoning
The two signed movements add to the final position.
Solution
- From −4 to 0 is 4 units right.
- From 0 to 5 is another 5 units right.
- (−4) + 9 = 5.
Result
Second movement: +9 units.
AIMS Method
- A — Attempt independently
Predict before calculating. - I — Investigate the idea
Identify signs, order and operation. - M — Make connections
Connect movements, tokens and expressions. - S — Scrutinise your reasoning
Check the sign, value and original conditions.
Think first. Use AI purposefully. Verify always.
Focused Practice
Pair the movements 1, −2, 3, −4, …, 9, −10. Find the endpoint.
Check & Feedback
Explain the key idea to someone who made the mistake described above. Use a model or a checked example.
