LOCATE · CHAPTER 1
LOCATE — Why Do We Need Coordinates?
Think first. Use AI purposefully. Verify always.
01 · DISCOVER
Start with a question.
A meeting point is somewhere on column 2 of a map. Could two friends still wait in different places?
Make a prediction before exploring. You do not need a rule yet.
02 · UNDERSTAND
A second direction needs a second clue.
A number line has one direction of movement, so one number locates a point once the origin and scale are agreed. A plane lets us move in two independent directions. A column alone leaves many possible positions; a row supplies the missing information.
03 · KEY IDEAS
Key Ideas
- Position is described relative to an agreed reference.
- A grid uses two crossing families of lines to organise locations.
- In a plane, one horizontal value alone does not fix the vertical position.
04 · VISUALISE
Explore the idea.
All positions on the highlighted column share horizontal value 2. Which one is the meeting point?
One clue or two?
First, you only know column 2. Predict what a row number would add.
One column still contains many possible positions.
A number line needs one value. A plane needs a second independent value.
05 · METHOD
From understanding to a method.
Agree on the reference, unit spacing and order. Give the horizontal location first, then the vertical location.
06 · ONE WORKED EXAMPLE
Follow each step.
On a grid measured from O, a marker is 2 units right and 3 units up. How can a friend find it?
- Start at the agreed reference O.
- Move 2 units right to choose the column.
- Move 3 units up to select one position on that column.
- Both pieces of information are needed: horizontal 2, vertical 3.
07 · AIMS METHOD
Your turn to reason.
- Attempt independently
- Investigate the idea
- Make connections
- Scrutinise your reasoning
Two markers share column 1. One is on row 2 and one on row 4. What extra information tells them apart?
Your written reasoning is not automatically graded or sent anywhere.08 · AIMS PRACTICE SPRINT
Vary the situation. Keep the idea.
Work through 10 questions on this concept. Select an answer before checking it; use the feedback to revise your reasoning.
Start practice sprint09 · CHECK & FEEDBACK
Correct answers receive an explanation. Incorrect answers receive a hint and another attempt. This is practice, not an examination.
TEXTBOOK CONNECTION · LOCATE
Now connect with your textbook.
Choose one item. Try it independently, then use an AIMS hint or compare the reasoning.
